Exploring innovation through a LUSEM internship
What happens when academic study meets real-world innovation? For Priya Mann,
an exchange student from Toronto, her semester at LUSEM became an opportunity to gain hands-on experience within Sweden’s dynamic life science ecosystem.
The exchange programme is a collaboration between LUSEM and the University of Toronto’s Rotman Commerce programme. The programme is for one semester, consists of two courses and a 10-week internship. LUSEM Startup Hub connects the students with internships in startups, innovation projects or a startup support organisation.
Major investments are being made in Borlänge and Falun, on Northvolt's former land, to develop one of Europe's largest data centers and an AI cluster.
According to Kerstin Enflo, professor in Economic history at LUSEM, the development is far from unique from a historical perspective.
“There are many examples in history where large investments in new technology have been completely ground-breaking for our economic development, but there are also examples where it has failed,” Kerstin explains.
The notion that the elderly in the past lived securely within extended families and were supported by their children is a romanticized exaggeration. Anton Svensson from Economic History demonstrates how elderly households in 19th-century Stockholm were in reality forced to navigate a vulnerable existence, where differences in living standards were deeply unequal.
As the one year presidency of LundaEkonomerna draws to a close, Agnes Ask starts eyeing the summer break while the new president Axel Elmberg is learning the ins and outs.
“It’s been an amazing year, fantastic though challenging at times and I have really had the chance to develop my leadership skills. Also I always used to put so much pressure on myself to achieve, to perform and deliver, but I have learned to let go a bit. Sometimes it doesn’t have to be perfect as long as the intention is good”, says Agnes Ask.
On 19 September LUSEM will host a series of lectures and discussions on the theme of "CRISIS" during Kulturnatten (the Culture Night), a festival in Lund organised in collaboration with Lund Municipality and Lund University. More detailed information will be published in August.
